Changes in your Body
Can Affect Bra Size
If you think increased weight goes everywhere except
your breasts, think again! Did you know that the average
woman's breast will change shape, size and distribution
at least 6 times during the course of her life? Weight
and hormone fluctuations can cause changes in the shape
and size of your breasts as you age. Breasts change
because of pregnancy, medications like birth control,
hormone replacement or cortisone, dietary changes, changes
in activity levels or breast augmentation. To avoid
back pain, posture problems and damage to your sensitive
breast tissue, The Girls recommend getting fitted for
a new bra at least once a year.
You know your bra is fitting you properly when:
- The back panel of the bra is level with the front, and doesn't ride up above the clasps.
- The cups hold the breasts fully, with no extra space and a smooth transition between the cup and your breast.
- The piece between the breasts lays flat against your chest, holding your bra snugly in place. (Not against the breasts. If the front piece does not sit snugly against your rib cage try a smaller band size. If the front or back clasps are pinching, try a larger band size.
- Adjust the straps so that they sit snugly on your shoulder, neither so tight that they pinch or mark your flesh nor so loose that they slide off the shoulder.
If the bra you are wearing does not meet these four requirements than you are not wearing the correct size and it is strongly recommended you drop by the Girls Bra Shop Inc. and have a proper bra fitting.
A proper bra fitting is not something you can do on your own; a tape measure calculation still allows for plenty of error. A trained professional with a selection of bras for you to try is the only accurate way to find your true size. We will find you the best cut and fit for your body type no matter what your size. Signs to be aware of that you are wearing the wrong size:
- Your breast pillow out of your bra (giving you the dreaded double boob)
- Your band is riding up in the back
- You experience back pain, neck pain, or headaches
- Your breasts fall out of the bottom of your bra
- Your wired dig in under your breast
- Your bra is gaping on your body
Why do we have a store online if we insist on you coming into the shop for a proper fitting? Many of our clients have requested the ease and comfort of shopping online once they have been fitted. Also, you may have been fitted by another boutique.
But if you insist on shopping online without first being professionally fitted then you need to follow these few steps: Pull out the tape measure to check these basic measurements to get an approximation of your bra size. But remember, these measurements are only a guide every woman's body is uniquely hers and you will want to experiment by trying on bras in different sizes to find the combination that works for you. Ultimately, the best way to do this is by being fitted by a professional fitter.
Determine Your Band Size
While still wearing your bra, measure around your rib cage just under the bottom edge of your bra. Make sure you hold the measuring tape in a comfortably snug position. This measurement represents the numbered part of your bra size. Again this is virtually impossible to do on your own and get accurate results. Did I mention it is recommended that you visit a professional bra fitter?
Add 4 to your measurement and round up to an even number.
Wrap the measuring tape loosely around your back and around the fullest part of your bust. The difference between this measurement and your band size represents your approximate cup size.
